Fitness for Dancers

FLUID Program
Foundational Learning for Universally Improved Dance

Dancers are a unique group of movers and largely differ from the majority in the modern world.  They require a specific vantage point to install strategies that assist them in becoming better dancers, while also hoping to avoid injury.  Many active people have some degree of strength but are lacking mobility and stability.  This is a by-product of both the way they live and the way they have been taught to “exercise”.  Dancers on the other hand, can be quite the opposite. Due to long duration static stretching and other (often ill-advised) practices that are common in the dance world, dancers often have lots of range of motion but lack true stability and control of that range.

This reality can both increase the risk of injury and reduce overall performance and potential.  We must remember, they are humans first and dancers second.  Approaching things this way, can keep them healthy, happy and progressing on schedule.  Our FLUID program is designed to deliver the appropriate assessments, movements and self-care strategies to increase the overall dance experience.  This is NOT to be confused with your average “workout” program or boot camp.

Areas of Focus:

  • Assess quality and capacity of movement to identify any glaring issues or restrictions

  • Provide education and dialogue on movement to alter perception-based obstacles

  • Counsel on emotion, breathing, communication, and state of mind

  • Teach and install recovery strategies to avoid and manage misuse and overuse injuries

  • Consult on habits and behaviors outside of dance and their effects on movement and health

  • Encourage and teach how to gain awareness of what their bodies feel like and why

  • Install movement programs to improve any discrepancies found during the assessment

  • Educate how to perform daily maintenance for tissue quality and pliability

  • Develop stability protocols addressing each joint

  • Establish an understanding of foot function and how it influences every movement

  • Review past teachings that may be a source of injury or movement dysfunction

  • Build and evolve motor control to re-establish patterns and control

  • Groom trunk stability, pelvic floor function, diaphragmatic efficiency, and intra-abdominal pressure
    And more……
